This is my story and how The Shelter for Women and Children has helped
me. About 8 months ago I was out in the world with no responsibilities.
I was getting high everyday, I didn’t work and I didn’t get to see my
kids like I should have. It was terrible. But then something happened
and I got in trouble, and I spent three long months in jail. Then I got
in Drug Court, and I was a little scared at first, but then saw good
things beginning to happen. I went to RCD (Rehab) for 28 days. It was
awesome! Then on August 10, 2009 I came to the Shelter. I didn’t know
what to expect but it has taught me a lot. I’ve gotten a job since I’ve
been here, and I am learning how to save money. It has taught me to be
responsible. It is a great place to help people start over and have a
great life. I haven’t been this content in a long time and I thank the
Shelter and all the Staff for everything they have done for me.

On August 10, 2009 I walked through the doors of The Shelter for Women and
Children in Henderson, Kentucky. Not only was I entering a brand new
place; I was embarking on a whole new world. You see, this is the first
time in almost 2 years I have been out in the real world, clean and
sober at that. But my anxiety quickly left. I was greeted with open
arms. There is so much hope and faith here and it is definitely
contagious. There is a structure and stability here that I welcomed.
This place and the Staff here have done so much for me. I am seeing my
kids on a regular basis, working and saving money. This will be the
first Christmas and first birthday I have ever spent with my youngest
son, and I give part of the credit to this place. My outlook on life is
nothing like it has ever been before in my life. I have been in recovery
for one year now and Sharon and the Staff here have opened so many doors
and given me the confidence to go that extra mile. At this point in my
life, I’m starting over and I do believe being here is the best place to
do that. God places people in our lives in the exact moment that we need
them. I know this is where I am supposed to be, and I am so grateful to
God that He allowed me to come here.

My luck ran out about a year ago when I lost custody of my two daughters.
Things really went down hill from there. I started using drugs and found
myself in jail. That is when I was introduced to Drug Court. They got me
out of jail and set me up with a place at the Shelter. I was nervous
about coming to a homeless shelter, but it’s a wonderful place. Here
they help me with my self esteem, social skills, money management and
lots of other skills I will need when I get out on my own. I am very
grateful to be here.
Stacey (To the staff)
I’d like to thank all of you so much for the care,
understanding, patience and the smiles. You all go beyond the
call of duty every day. I’m thankful for the facility and
having a place to go when needed. You gave hugs when I
needed them, strength to push forward when I was at my weakest;
I was given hope and taught to believe in myself again. The
facility is nice but it would not be the same without each of
you, for each one has something special and different to offer.
I feel as though I made some true friends here.
Mrs. Sharon & Staff
I just want each of you to know I learned something from
everyone of you while I was here:
